Davis Repair Honors Earth Day

In honor of earth day we at Davis Repair are thinking of the ways we protect our mother earth. In the last year our photovoltaic solar panels have generated 29,529 kWh of electricity. We recently installed a waste oil heater to use the waste oil generated by fluid exchanges such as oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, drivetrain fluids, and brake fluid. We planted two trees on the east side of our building. We recycle all of the used metal parts we remove from the vehicles we work on. At Davis Repair we are always looking for ways to conserve and recycle

Buying the Right Tires and Wheels In Centennial Colorado

Everyone in Centennial Colorado eventually replaces their tires, whether it’s because they’re worn out or they’re just looking for something different. There are so many great tire choices in the Denver Metro area, it can be difficult to sort them out. Let’s group the broad spectrum into several categories that will help in the selection process. One category is often referred to as “summer tires.” Summer tires are designed to be driven on the road when temperatures are generally above 45 degrees. Their tread design is optimized for traction on dry roads in Colorado and they’re also able to effectively displace water on rainy roads. The rubber compound on these summer tires gets a little hard and stiff as temperatures drop below 45 degrees as it often does here in the Greater Denver area. And the tread which handles dry roads so well, can get packed with snow or mud – which provides very little traction in those conditions ... read more

Fuel System Cleaning at Davis Repair for Better Performance

Hi Centennial auto owners. Let’s talk fuel injectors. A fuel injector is a valve that delivers fuel to a vehicle’s engine. It has to deliver the precise amount of fuel, to precisely the right place, precisely when the engine needs it. The fuel also has to be mixed with air before it can burn in the engine. Fuel injectors are engineered to spray fuel in a specific pattern into the engine. (The pattern varies by engine type and design.) In order to achieve these spray patterns, the fuel must be pressurized. The pressure in a fuel injection system varies depending on its type. Many gasoline truck engines use port injection systems, which operate with a pressure of 60 pounds per square inch. Newer direct injection systems operate at 10 to 30 times that pressure. Some diesel passenger vehicles have fuel injectors that operate at 30,000 pounds or more per square inch. Vehicles have one fuel injector for each cylinder in the engine. Your vehicle’s cont ... read more

The Davis Repair Guide To Caring For Your Transmission

Most cars and trucks have automatic transmissions, yet a lot of Greenwood Village car owners only have a fuzzy understanding about what a transmission does. Think back to the last time you rode a bike around your neighborhood. You started out in a lower gear and shifted to higher gears as you went faster. Down shift for hills, stuff like that. Think of your legs as the engine – there’s an ideal speed you can pedal and you change gears to leverage the work you’re doing. Lower gears for power on hills or for starting out. Higher gears for more speed. That’s what the automatic transmission does – it automatically starts in lower gears and shifts up to higher gears to go faster on Colorado freeways. And automatically shifts back down to climb Greenwood Village hills, to pass, or to start up again. Truck automatic transmissions have certainly gotten more sophisticated in recent years. They have more speeds than before: the base is four speeds and five is ve ... read more

Keep Your Tires Well Rounded in Centennial: Tire Rotation and Wheel Balancing at Davis Repair

Taking care of our tires is a vital part of car care for Denver area drivers. We know they have to be replaced when they wear out, but tires also require some important preventive maintenance. This maintenance will improve fuel efficiency and extend the life of your tires, so it’s well worth the effort and expense get it done. Tire maintenance includes keeping tires properly inflated, rotating tires, and balancing wheels. The recommended tire pressure for a vehicle’s tires is printed on a sticker on the inside of the driver’s side doorjamb. A lot of engineering goes into calculating the correct pressure, so it’s a key number for drivers to know. Not following this recommendation can throw off your suspension system and can lead to expensive tire damage. Underinflated tires wear out more quickly than properly inflated tires. Vehicles also get better traction, handling, and fuel economy on properly inflated tires. Check your tire pressure at least once a week and add air if ... read more

Recommended Service Intervals and Why You NEED to Change Your Oil

Everyone in Greenwood Village, Colorado knows we are advised to go to our local dentist twice a year. Oral-conscious people have both a teeth-cleaning and examination. Once a year, we get x-rays to look for problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye. When our dentist is done, he/she tells us what was found – “Everything’s fine, see you in six months.” Or “You’ve got a small cavity starting, let’s schedule an appointment to take care of it.” By the time you leave, you have a plan for addressing any necessary issues. This system works so much better than waiting for a painful problem before going into the dentist. Small problems are fixed before they turn into big expensive problems. And you avoid those huge bills. If Denver folks understand the wisdom of using this system for handling dental care, why do many resist when facing the same system for our vital car maintenance? Following the auto manufacturer’s reco ... read more

Shake It Up in Centennial!: Why Wheel Balancing

Our vehicles are not massage chairs. While we may enjoy a good vibration in an overstuffed recliner, we Centennial car owners generally want as smooth a ride as possible in our vehicles. One way to achieve this is to keep a vehicle’s wheels in balance. When a tire is mounted onto a wheel, it is usually out of balance. This means that as the wheel spins, there is a slight wobble to the path of the tire. For best handling performance and safety on the road, drivers want to minimize this wobble as much as possible; so we balance our tires. To balance a tire, your honest and friendly Davis Repair service advisor spins it on a machine or drum to determine where it is off-balance. He then attaches weights that counter-balance the uneven weight. Most car owners are surprised at how much balancing improves the smoothness of their ride. High-quality tires generally hold their balance well. But over time, wear and tear take their toll and tires can become unbal ... read more

The Importance Of Centennial Drivers Following Service Intervals

Today we’re going to talk about following recommended service intervals. Your vehicle isn’t the only aspect of your life with recommended intervals: Let’s start with twice yearly dental check-ups and regular physical exams. How about laundry, watering your lawn, and paying your bills? Now, what would happen if you didn’t follow these intervals? Well, you’d probably get more cavities. You may not discover health conditions that could be more effectively treated with early detection. And you’d have to wear dirty clothes, be embarrassed by your brown lawn, and have your utilities shut off. Clearly, there are some things in life that we have to take care of regularly. If we don’t, there are negative consequences. Our quality of life takes a hit and it inevitably costs more money. So why is it so hard to remember to follow regular preventive maintenance on our vehicles? Probably for a couple of reasons. One is that au ... read more

E-85 Fuel Safety Advice

Today at Davis Repair we want to talk with you about a very important safety issue. This automotive safety warning is coming from a very unusual source: fire fighting experts. You’ve probably heard of E-85 gasoline being offered in the Denver area. Some newer vehicle models are specifically built to run on E-85 – the rest are not. E-85 gasoline has been developed to fight air pollution and reduce oil consumption. E-85 fuel is a mix of 85% ethanol, a grain-base alcohol, and 15% gasoline. So-called Flex-Fuel vehicles are designed to use either normal gasoline or E-85 gas. The result is lower harmful exhaust emissions to our local Denver community. All gas engines can run with up to 10% ethanol and in fact a lot of gasoline sold in the Centennial Colorado area does contain some ethanol. The problem comes when well meaning people without Flex Fuel certified vehicles put E-85 into the tank. At a 15% concentration, the potentia ... read more

Watching Your Check Engine Light

Did you know that most of the cars driving around Centennial Colorado carry more computer power than the Apollo 121 Lunar Module that landed on the moon in 1969? New cars sold in the Denver area have as many as twelve networked computers and over five miles (eight kilometers) of wiring. In fact, for the last decade or so, auto computers have been controlling about 85 percent of your vehicle’s functions. Cars have sensors for manifold air temperature, coolant temperature, manifold air pressure, airflow, throttle position, vehicle speed and oxygen content. All of this electronic wizardry is pretty complicated. So how do you know when there is a problem? It’s simple; the Check Engine light comes on. The computer monitors all the sensors and uses that information to decide what to adjust such as the fuel mix, spark timing and idle speed. In addition, the computer monitors its own circuits. When it finds a fault, it turns on t ... read more
